Tell your anaesthesia team about your GLP-1

Before surgery or a procedure, open the reminder card on the Medication page, note where you are in your dose cycle, and read what the guidance it links to says to discuss with the team.

If you have surgery or a procedure coming up, the anaesthesia team needs to know you take a GLP-1 and where you are in your dose cycle. The Medication page has a card that says what to tell them and links to the guidance anaesthesia societies published, so you can go through its points with the team.

Steps

  1. Open the menu, then Track → Medication (Medication).
  2. Open Having surgery or a procedure soon?, just below the dose timeline link.
  3. Note what the card says about where you are in your cycle — your shot-week phase and the day since your last recorded injection, or that your record says a daily tablet.
  4. Select Read the multi-society guidance to open the 2024 guidance the card rests on, and note the points it raises: a shared decision about continuing treatment around the procedure, a clear-liquid diet for the 24 hours before, and the dose-escalation phase carrying more risk of delayed stomach emptying than steady maintenance.
  5. Tell the anaesthesia team you take a GLP-1, which one, and where you are in your cycle, and go through those points with them and your prescriber.

Good to know

  • The card says what to tell the team and what to discuss. It never says whether to have or to hold a dose before a procedure — that decision is the anaesthesia team's and your prescriber's.
  • The shot-week phase and day come from your logged injections, so they are only as current as your log. If you haven't logged your last dose, log it first.
  • A daily tablet has no shot week, so the card says your record shows a tablet and leaves the rest to the team.
  • The guidance is linked rather than restated so you read it as the societies wrote it. Everything on the card is information for a conversation, not a plan for your medication.
  • If you are asked for a summary of your doses, Prepare for my appointment on the same page builds one.
